Hilltop Auction is a family owned local business in Alton, IL. In 1937, the original founder, Art Long, started the business as a live stock auction and over time converted to an auction house to do it all: real estate and personal property. The business was very successful until 1980, when Art unexpectedly passed away. It was at this time that the auction house was purchased by George Carroll and has been in the family ever since, thanks to George’s early efforts and success.
In November of 1990, ground was broken to build what is now the area’s nicest auction facility – complete with heating, air conditioning, and a banquet center capable of holding up to 400 people and the area’s largest auctions.
In 2013, George passed unexpectedly and the business was taken over by his son, Josh Carroll, who had been following in his father’s footsteps throughout life. Josh learned to auction at the young age of 5 and has been going strong ever since.
After hosting some of the largest auctions ever held in 2014 there was another ground breaking, this time for another building to double the size of available auction space and the parking area. As of 2017, up to five auction rings can be sold at one time.
